Venice was a place I always dreamt of visiting. Happy to have ticked it off my bucket list.

Getting There and Accommodation

Our Contiki tour stayed just outside Venice at the Holiday Inn. It was one of the more comfortable hotels in the tour.

In the morning, we caught a water taxi to San Marco. Due to rain and high tides, most of the city was flooded. We learnt that it was worst in the mornings during winter.

When we arrived, everyone was wearing either gumboots or gaiters. We were told to purchase some before boarding the water taxi as they can be expensive on the island.

Things to Do

Having only one day to look around, we spent it getting lost in San Marco’s alleyways. Our gaiters started leaking very early on and luckily we were prepared with jandals.

We checked out the Basilica di San Marco (also partly flooded) and I loved the golden ceilings in this one.

And who visits Venice without a Venetian Gondola ride? We managed to secure a private gondola through our tour manager Magdi. A gondola ride can be expensive but it is definitely worth it.

Overall, Venice was a highlight from our Europe trip, and we’ll definitely be revisiting in the future!
